No rest for the weary

I have a few minutes to spare so I’ll post an update of what is going on with me. I had promised a post of India and pictures of this trip but unfortunately I didn’t get a chance to do any sight-seeing. It was a business trip and we did get allot of business done. The choice of the outsource company has been a good one. While in India I did get a chance to eat some delicious food and put on a few kilos in the process.

Last week I got a chance to see a Kabuki play. If you’re unsure what Kabuki is, it is a Japanese play, all movement is very stylized and superbly graceful. Kabuki in nothing like a play that western audience are used to. For one thing a Kabuki performance may take 6 or 8 hours to complete and have very difficult stories to keep track of. It must be incredibly difficult to perform in Kabuki with the stars of the show having to have multiple roles in the performance, as many as 7 in this last show we saw. Kabuki started in the 17th century in Kyoto by women that have since been excluded in the performance of Kabuki. Although there are modern acts that support a women cast the mainstream Kabuki acts are all performed by men. The show was very interesting and I may see another in the future, hopefully one that has a modern cast of women and men.

This past weekend was a trip to Gunma, a small mountain village famous for the onsens available there. (FYI onsen is a Japanese hot bath). Most onsens are heated by underground volcanic activity but the onsens in Gunma lacked any sulfur smells. The ryokan we stayed at was very comfortable with a friendly staff. Now that I use a wheelchair for getting around I found small Japanese towns to be very difficult.

It’s been a busy few weeks. I hope to be able to rest a bit until the next flurry of activity comes along.
